Who are we...

The Bayswater Toy Library is a not-for-profit community organisation that has been providing fun and educational toys since 1985.

The library is coordinated by a committee and is completely run by volunteers.
As part of their membership, members agree to help out with rosters every 6 to 8 weeks and at stocktake time in January. We also encourage members to help out with the general running of the library in any way they can.

Members can borrow a range of toys and activities suitable for 0-7 including good quality educational, constructive and imaginative toys which are continually updated. We have over 1200 toys, divided into sections for babies, imagination, construction, art, dress ups, science, motors, dolls, sports, jigsaws and games. There are also parenting books and party boxes.
Each child can borrow up to four items across the categories and there are additional toys and parent resources allowed per family, which is all included as part of the membership fees.

Why Use A Toy Library?

Why Borrow Toys?

Borrowing toys is a great money saver as it gives children a change when they become bored with their own toys, and is a way for parents to try toys before buying them. It also saves on space in the home, knowing they can be returned, especially large toys such as ride-on cars and outdoor play equipment! There are also benefits such as teaching children care and responsibility for property.

You don't have to be a mum or dad either, we have grandparents who use our library too!

About Membership

Membership starts from $80 annually. Additional children only $20 each.

So what’s involved?

Rosters

Members can nominate whether they would prefer to do rosters on Tuesday afternoons or Saturday mornings. Depending on membership numbers, members usually only have to complete a roster once every two months.

Borrowing

Toys are borrowed for a maximum two week period, with no extensions.
Annual membership entitles members to borrow for each child included in the membership:
  • 4 toys from any of the categories
And each family can also borrow;
  • 1 Parent resource
  • 1 Education parent resource
  • 1 Red dot toy
It is essential that you count the number of pieces for each toy either prior to borrowing or as soon as you get home and ensure that the toy is either complete or matches the details on the toy list.

Returning Toys

Members are responsible for returning toys cleaned and complete, no later than two weeks from when they were borrowed. Each toy is re-counted upon return to ensure that no pieces have gone missing during the borrowing period. Any damaged or missing pieces are recorded by the member on roster.

Fines

Missing Pieces -$2.00 per piece, with $1 refundable upon its return Late Toys - $1 per toy, per week late Damaged Toys – cost of replacement (unless damage is because of normal wear and tear)

Membership Fees

All funds raised go back into buying new toys for the library. People are welcome to come and have a look around before making a decision to join. You don't have to be a parent to use our library, we have grandparents who use our library too. We unfortunately don’t have EFTPOS or Credit Card facilities available for payment of membership fees.

Hygiene/Safety

In the interest of our children’s' health, members are to clean toys and disinfect, where appropriate, before returning them to the Toy Library. Please keep packaging bags away from children to avoid suffocation. It is your responsibility to check the suitability of toys for your children. The Toy Library accepts no liability for any injuries sustained whilst using the toys

Supervision

Children are encouraged to come and choose their toys but it is essential that you supervise your children whilst visiting the Toy Library to ensure their safety and prevent toys being removed from their packaging leading to pieces being misplaced.

Committee

The committee is made up of members, like yourself, who meet approximately every 6 weeks to discuss the running of the Toy Library. You are more than welcome to attend a meeting, join the committee or help out in any other way you may think useful. There is a list of current committee members on the notice board at the toy library.
